12 Absolute Falsehoods About Breastfeeding

Media has subjected us to various myths about breastfeeding encouraging a generation of mothers to deny one of the most precious gifts or nutrition and health to their beloved newborn.
Here are the common falsehoods that are simply not true.
  1. Many women believe that they are not producing enough milk for their infant.
  2. Breastfeeding hurts and is painful.
  3. There is not enough milk during the first three days after birth.       
  4. A baby needs to be on breast fed at least 20 minutes on each side and that causes sore nipples.
  5. Breast milk lacks vitamin D.
  6. A mother has to sanitize her breasts each time before nursing the baby.
  7. Frequent breast pumping helps to increase the mother’s natural milk supply.
  8. Breast milk does not contain enough iron supplements for the baby's needs compared to infant formula.
  9. It is so much easier to bottle feed than to breastfeed the baby.
  10. Breastfeeding is inconvenient and ties the mother down.
  11. Modern formulas are better than breastmilk.
  12. If the mother has an infection she should immediately stop breastfeeding.
